The tenth volume of The musical work, its ontological and cognitive aspects (Dzieło muzyczne, jego aspekty ontologiczne i poznawcze) research paper collection focuses on the creators of music. The applied perspective of examining the composers’ oeuvre implies the use of not only methods shaped basing on the musical standards, but also those, equally effective, characteristic of other fields of science: sociology, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and others. This explains the wide range of research attitudes manifesting themselves in the articles included herewith – analyses based on categories extracted from the structure of musical work find their completion in interpretations inspired by theories from the area of humanities while normative analyses are extended through interpretations with foundations in descriptive methods. Thematic areas the articles presented in this volume ‘register with’, similarly to the methodologies in use, display a significant diversity of issues, nevertheless three problems among them seem to have gained an exceptional importance: the status of the creator of musical work, biographical contexts of artistic output as well as relations between “nodal points” of the composer’s life and the music written. Such angles allow one to uncover the factors stimulating the creative process, simultaneously confirming – due to the observed concurrences between empirical and spiritual life of the composer and the musical works created – the exquisite remark by Mieczysław Tomaszewski as to the “musical work being born in a precise location and at a precise time, an expression of […] a unique personality”.
